Paybyphone secures 7th London borough

Ealing will be the first to offer cash alternative at PayPoint outlets
PayByPhone, formerly Verrus UK and now part of the PayPoint group, has been awarded a contract by the London Borough of Ealing to roll out the PayByPhone service across the whole of the borough. The service, covering both on and off street parking, will commence in early January 2011.

Ealing will be the launch pad for PayByPhones initiative to use the nationwide chain of PayPoint outlets at neighbourhood convenience stores, newsagents and supermarkets to offer a cash payment option for casual parking payments. This will enable the council at some future date to offer alternative parking schemes which do not require pay and display machines while continuing to offer a cash payment option for those without bank accounts or credit cards.

The contract will also include a virtual residents visitor permit scheme to replace the current scratch card system. Residents will be able to book their visitor parking by calling the PayByPhone service to register the licence plate details on their account. An online visitor registration facility will be added in the near future.

Enforcement of both the mobile phone payment transactions and the residents visitor e-permits is provided through an integrated solution with notice enforcement software provider, SPUR Solutions Si -Dem system.

The unique ability of the PayPoint group to offer a cash payment option means that, for the first time, councils can really contemplate a machine-free environment, with all the economic benefits that brings, while continuing to ensure that motorists who cant or wont pay by card have a convenient alternative.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for Transport and Environment, said: We want to make paying for parking as simple as possible and this additional method of payment will do this. It allows motorists more flexibility and is a stress free way of paying for parking. Its quick and secure no more hunting for the right change. The text alerts also mean that motorists no longer need to hurry back to their vehicle as they can use their mobile phone to top up from wherever they are.

The PayByPhone service replaces RingGo, which had been on trial in one car park in Ealing.

PayByPhone now processes around 50,000 transactions a day and is signing up 57,000 new users each month.
